Cappadocia is a mesmerizing region in South Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for its surreal landscapes featuring underground cities and rock-hewn churches. With its fairy chimneys and ancient cave dwellings, this captivating area offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history.
Cappadocia is not a town but a landscape: a plateau of soft volcanic tuff eroded into cones, ridges and «fairy chimneys», hollowed out over two thousand years into churches, homes and whole underground cities. Göreme is the base in the middle of it; Ürgüp, Uçhisar and Avanos are the other villages, all within twenty minutes.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum, a short walk from the village, is the concentration of rock-cut Byzantine churches with the best-preserved frescoes — the Dark Church, kept dim to protect the paint, is the one to pay extra for. The valleys start at the village edge: Rose and Red Valley for the evening light and the churches along the trail, Love Valley for the tallest chimneys, Pigeon Valley for the walk to Uçhisar. Each is two to three hours on foot.
Uçhisar Castle is the tallest rock in the region, a natural fortress riddled with rooms, and its top is the widest viewpoint over everything. Çavuşin is the abandoned cliff village with the church of St. John the Baptist high in the rock face. Zelve, further on, is a whole monastic valley of three canyons that was inhabited until the 1950s. Paşabağ, next to it, has the mushroom-shaped chimneys with the hermit's chapel inside.
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the underground cities, eight levels deep, with stables, churches, wineries and rolling stone doors — Derinkuyu is the deeper, Kaymaklı the wider. Avanos on the Red River is the pottery town, with workshops where you can throw a pot on the wheel. The Ihlara Valley, an hour south-west, is a green canyon with a river and churches along a fourteen-kilometre trail.
Hot-air balloons take off at dawn on almost every calm morning, a hundred or more at once. You don't have to fly to see it: the sunrise viewpoint above Göreme, the Love Valley overlook or the Uçhisar terraces give the full picture from the ground.
