Batumi is a seaside city between the Black Sea and the wooded hills of Adjara, with a subtropical climate and a skyline of new towers behind a 19th-century port town. The boulevard along the pebble beach is its spine; the old town sits just behind the harbour; the botanical garden and the mountain villages are short trips north and east.
Batumi Boulevard runs seven kilometres along the shore, with the Alphabet Tower, the Ferris wheel and the dancing fountains near the port end. The moving steel statue of Ali and Nino, two figures that pass through each other every ten minutes, stands at the start of the pier. Miracle Park behind it and the cable car to Anuria hill give the view over the bay and the city.
Behind the harbour, the streets around Europe Square and Piazza are the old port town: art nouveau façades, the astronomical clock, the Medea statue with the golden fleece. The Orta Jame mosque, the Armenian church and the Catholic cathedral turned Orthodox stand within a few blocks of each other, a sign of what kind of port this was. The Batumi Archaeological Museum holds the finds from the Roman fort at Gonio.
The Batumi Botanical Garden on the cape north of the city is one of the largest in the region, terraced down the cliff to the sea with plants from every subtropical zone — allow half a day. Beyond it, the Petra fortress ruins. South of the city, the Gonio-Apsaros fortress is the Roman and Byzantine garrison town with its walls intact, next to the Sarpi border and the clearest beach on this coast.
